DIVE INTO NONFICTION
AND THE WORLD OF SHARKS!

All writing begins with research. And what could be more exciting than researching sharks! Heather will share her research and writing process, focusing on Swimming with Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark. Engaging in hands-on activities, students will learn fascinating facts about sharks and why they deserve our respect and protection.
Grades K-5, 45 minutes, up to 75 students.

GOT GRIT?

What do all of Heather Lang’s books have in common? They're true stories about women who overcame obstacles and fought for their dreams. In this fun, interactive program, Heather discusses the obstacles she has faced during her journey as a writer and how grit helps her during the research, writing, and revision process. She will share her research process and how good detective work can make a story sing. Comparing first drafts and sketches with final copy and art, students will learn the importance of revision both for the author and illustrator. Heather will model important character-building strategies, such as setting goals and learning from failures, and students will come away with tips and tools that they can apply to their own writing and other facets of their lives.
Grades 2-5, 45 minutes, up to 75 students.

GIRLS WITH GRIT: RESEARCHING AND WRITING ABOUT BRAVE WOMEN

Heather will discuss her picture book biographies about trailblazing women. Discover how these brave women inspire her and can inspire kids to be brave, set goals, and learn from failure. She’ll share how she transforms the spark of an idea into a book and discuss her research process. Join her on her exciting research adventures for The Leaf Detective and Swimming with Sharks. Then, comparing first drafts with final copy, Heather will reveal how she brings her stories to life with revision.

Praise from Teachers

"Having Heather visit our school and talk with my second graders as well as my after school "Girls With Grit" Bookclub was a life changing experience for my students. They were so thrilled to speak with her about all of the remarkable women in her books. She did an amazing presentation about Ruth Law and made each student feel special. They still refer to her as 'our Heather Lang.'"
     —Michelle Gajda, Hawlemont Elementary, MA

"In my library Heather has a following of young readers. They greet her like an old friend when she arrives to share about the life of another strong woman. Students have even started giving her advice about who she should research for her next book! The enthusiasm for Swimming With Sharks led to fourth graders drawing and painting some of their favorite sharks and second graders writing shark cinquains for poetry month! We can’t wait to read Heather’s next book and see where it leads us."

How long is a great white shark?

“Heather has been visiting with our first graders for the past four years. From start to finish, her programs are engaging,  interactive and inspiring. Additionally, she is consistently on-point with age appropriate vocabulary, activities and behavior management skills. Over the course of an hour, Heather shares her own experiences, both of her days as an aspiring author, as well as the writing process she undertakes with each new book. Her roll of "rejection letters" from publishers amused, yet motivated our students to follow their ambitions. With a focus on her book, Swimming with Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark, Heather captivated our students as they made predictions, labeled the parts of a shark, examined a shark jaw and discovered how many first graders it would take, head to toe, to be of equal length to a shark. As the author of biographies that depict the lives of extraordinary, yet often unknown women throughout history, Heather highlights the importance of determination, grit and perseverance throughout life. Weeks after her visit, our students still refer to Heather and her story, as they grow as researchers and writers. “
—The First Grade Team, Chickering Elementary, Dover, MA

Shark science: learning about shark anatomy

“Heather Lang's Dive into Nonfiction and the World of Sharks author visit presentation was an absolute delight for our kindergarten, first and second grade students. Her engaging storytelling and vibrant visuals captivated our young audience, sparking their curiosity about the wonders of the underwater world, the fascinating lives of sharks and the amazing accomplishments of the "Shark Lady," Eugenie Clark. Heather's interactive approach kept the children actively participating and learning throughout the session. The visit was truly an enriching experience that inspired our students to dive deeper into the world of nonfiction literature. We highly recommend Heather to any school seeking to ignite curiosity and a love for learning in their young readers.”
